How to apply for your director identification number

Are you a company director?

You may have heard some news about the introduction of a new directors identification number or director ID. This will be a new requirement for all company directors and has been designed to help combat illegal activity by making it easier to trace directors’ relationships with companies.

What is it?

A unique identifier that all directors will need to apply for once and keep forever.

What is it for?

It has been created to streamline how individuals register, view and maintain business information.

Who will need one?

Anyone who is a director of a company, registered foreign company or registered Australian body.

When do you need to apply?

  • Directors appointed on or before 31 October 2021 must apply before 30 November 2022

  • Directors appointed between 1 November 2021 and 4 April 2022 must apply within 28 days of appointment

  • Directors to be appointed from 5 April 2022 must apply before their appointment

How do you apply?

All directors need to apply for their own director ID, no one else can do it on your behalf. The fastest (and easiest) way is to apply using the myGovID app.

Please note: myGovID is an identity app and is different from myGov which is an account you use to connect to online services.

➡️ Step 1 - Set up the myGovID app and verify your identity

➡️ Step 2 - Gather your documents

➡️ Step 3 - Apply for your director ID via Australian Business Registry Service (takes less than 5 mins)
